Former South Carolina State football coach Willie Jeffries traveled to Atlanta to receive the inaugural HBCU Contributions to Football Award from the Maxwell Football Club.

The award, announced in November, will be presented annually to an outstanding contributor from a historically black college, athletic department, football program

or conference.

“Coach Jeffries accomplishments reflect not only his success as a football coach but also his enduring legacy in promoting the values of teamwork, discipline, and inclusivity in sports,” Maxwell Football Club Executive Director Mark Wolpert said. “His impact on collegiate football, particularly South Carolina State university, is still fell today. His contributions have established a standard of excellence for all that follow him.”

After a video presentation, former Georgia state representative Alveda King presented the award to Jeffries. King is the niece of civil

rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

“To be the first of anything is special,” Jeffries said to the crowd at the College Football Hall of Fame. He thanked his wife Mary along with other family members that were in attendance.

“Coach Willie Jeffries not only impacted the landscape of HBCU football but also paved the way for future generations of athletes and coaches,” ESPN Events Executive Director John Grant said. “His pioneering spirit and unwavering commitment to excellence inspired countless players to believe in their potential and strive for greatness on and off the field.”
