Kameron Haynie, a senior at Westwood High School, has been elected to represent South Carolina on the national Youth Leadership Council (YLC).
Haynie was chosen for this prestigious role by his fellow South Carolina delegates while attending the Washington Youth Tour in Washington, D.C., last month. His initial trip was sponsored by Fairfield Electric Cooperative, and the YLC program is sponsored by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA).
In July, Haynie returned to the nation’s capital to attend Basecamp, a specialized program designed to equip the 45 YLC student delegates from across the country with the resources needed for their year of service. The four-day event features hands-on workshops, meetings with NRECA leaders, and team-building activities.
“I’m expecting to grow tremendously as a leader, both this week and in the next year as I represent SC on a national level,” said Haynie. “YLC is a chance for me to get involved in something larger than my own school and allows me to be part of a community that serves.”
Throughout his one-year term, Haynie will develop and deliver a speech, attend monthly virtual meetings to hone his leadership and advocacy skills, and complete a local service project in partnership with Fairfield Electric.

Haynie’s term on the council will conclude next February with a trip to NRECA’s PowerXchange and TechAdvantage conference in San Diego, California.
