Voorhees University launches “The Wright Annual Fund” to celebrate legacy and empower future leaders

Voorhees University proudly announces the launch of The Wright Annual Fund, an annual giving campaign inspired by the enduring legacy of its founder, Elizabeth Evelyn Wright, and built upon the university’s foundational pillars: inspiration, determination, imagination, and faith.

These four principles have guided Voorhees University for over a century, shaping generations of students and transforming lives through education. The Wright Annual Fund honors Wright’s unwavering commitment to educational equity and her courageous journey that began in Bamberg County at just 23 years old.

A Georgia native and student at Booker T. Washington’s Tuskegee Institute, Wright envisioned a future where education would uplift Black communities. Despite threats, attacks, and arson, she persisted—returning to Tuskegee to complete her degree before founding the Denmark Industrial School in 1897. With support from philanthropists Ralph and Mrs. Voorhees, the school opened in 1902, becoming the only high school for Black students in the region.

Today, Voorhees University continues to thrive, thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends. Recent achievements include:
• Ranked #1 HBCU in South Carolina for graduating students in four years.

Ranked #9 nationally among HBCUs for fouryear graduation rates.
• Awarded 20 Presidential Scholarships and 30 Dean’s Scholarships to deserving students.
• Advanced academic initiatives through facility upgrades and expanded paid research and internship opportunities.
• Supported 10 White Coat Scholars through the Medical School Initiative, strengthening the pipeline to health professions.

“Our history is rooted in resilience and vision,” said Ronnie Hopkins, Ph.D., President & CEO of Voorhees University. “I invite you to make a gift to The Wright Annual Fund today. Together, we will prepare principled leaders and ensure that Voorhees thrives for generations to come. On behalf of our amazing students, world-class faculty, and dedicated staff, I thank you for advancing Voorhees University to The Next Level of Excellence.”
