Voorhees University proudly recognized outstanding individuals for their exceptional leadership, service, and commitment to community at the Annual President’s Scholarship Gala, held on Saturday, April 12. The event celebrated the achievements of three distinguished honorees whose work aligns with the university’s mission of excellence, purpose, and impact.
“It is our honor to recognize these incredible individuals who have not only achieved great success in their respective fields but have also demonstrated a steadfast commitment to serving others,” said Voorhees University President Dr. Ronnie Hopkins. “Their stories inspire our students and embody the values we uphold as an institution dedicated to leadership, service, and transformation.”
Voorhees University extends heartfelt congratulations to these remarkable honorees for their achievements and unwavering commitment to service. Their leadership continues to light the path for future generations of Voorhees students and alumni.
The Keeper of the Flame Award was presented to The Rev. Canon Dr. Michele V. Hagans, a native of Washington, D.C., and a lifelong leader in both ministry and business. Canon Hagans holds a B.A. in Zoology and a Master’s in Engineering from Howard University, along with an MBA from The George Washington University. Her professional career includes work with General Electric and a leadership role as President of her family’s real estate and development companies, including Fort Lincoln Realty Company and Hagans Development Company. Ordained in 2007, she serves in various roles within the Episcopal Diocese of Washington.

South Carolina State Representative Justin T. Bamberg received the President’s Award of Excellence for his dedicated public service and advocacy. Representing District 90, which includes Bamberg, Colleton, Dorchester, and Orangeburg Counties, Rep. Bamberg is an accomplished attorney and founder of Bamberg Legal, LLC. A graduate of the University of South Carolina with both a B.A. and J.D., he serves on numerous boards including Healing Species, Inc., and is a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. His work reflects a deep commitment to justice, civic engagement, and the people of South Carolina.
Mayor Wilma Edmonds of Govan, South Carolina, was honored with the Elizabeth Evelyn Wright Award. A dedicated public servant, insurance agent, and hairstylist, Mayor Edmonds has served her community through leadership roles including her participation in Leadership Salkehatchie and her recent appointment to the Lower Savannah Council of Governments board. She is also affiliated with Edmonds Insurance Agency Inc. Mayor Edmonds embodies the spirit of Voorhees University’s founder through her tireless work to uplift and empower her local community.
