Voorhees hosted 2nd Annual MLK Breakfast/Drum Major Awards

On Monday, January 20, 2025, Voorhees University hosted its 2nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Breakfast, a cherished tradition to honor the legacy of Dr. King. The event celebrated those who exemplify his unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and service.

Held at 7:45 am in the Leonard E. Dawson Gymnasium, the highlight of the morning was the presentation of the prestigious “Drum Major for Justice Awards.” These awards recognize individuals whose dedication to building stronger, more equitable communities continues to inspire us all.

  • Reverend James Holiday of Norway, SC

  • Allendale Town Councilwoman Lottie Lewis

  • District 90 SC House of Representatives Justin Bamberg

Additionally, a Lifetime Achievement Award was bestowed upon Dr. Gerald Wright, the esteemed Mayor of Denmark, for his decades-long contributions to community leadership and advocacy.

Each honoree embodies Dr. King’s powerful message: “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” Their tireless efforts in fostering unity, compassion, and progress reflect the very values that Dr. King championed throughout his life.

Dr. Ronnie Hopkins, President of Voorhees University, shared his reflections on the occasion: “This celebration is a testament to the enduring legacy of Dr. King and the impact of servant leadership in our communities. Each honoree represents the best of who we are as a society and inspires us to strive for justice, equality, and service in all we do. We are proud to recognize these remarkable individuals and their extraordinary contributions.”

This year’s celebration was not only a time to reflect on Dr. King’s enduring legacy but also an opportunity to look forward with hope and determination, inspired by these remarkable individuals.

The Voorhees community extends heartfelt congratulations to all the award recipients. Their example is a call to action for us all to serve, lead, and create positive change in our own communities.
