Vice-President of Colombia, South America’s son to attend South Carolina HBCU

Voorhees University is proud to announce that among the new first-year students entering the spring 2024 class is Kevin Marquez Mina, the son of the Vice-President of Colombia, South America. Kevin is pursuing a degree in sociology with a focus on the intersection of social groups and political life.

Kevin’s passion for social justice is deeply rooted in his upbringing and experiences in both the United States and Colombia. He is committed to using his education to address issues such as white supremacy, environmental exploitation, poverty, gender inequity, and the exploitation of labor.

“I am exceedingly grateful to President Dr. Ronnie Hopkins and the Voorhees administration for allowing me the opportunity to study at a black university, where there is an explicit commitment to educating black people so that they may lift up themselves,” Kevin expressed.

President Hopkins shared his vision, stating, “Voorhees University has embraced a living philosophy of Becoming Beloved Community and strategically includes engagement with international students and faculty to ensure that they are strengthened and to optimize their trajectories to the Next Level of Excellence.”

Kevin is inspired by the legacies of trailblazers like Elizabeth Evelyn Wright, the first black woman to found and preside over an HBCU, and his mother, the first black woman to serve as Vice-President of Colombia, South America. He hopes to find his own path that will allow him to contribute to the struggle for justice and equity for black people in the Americas.
