Life Hope Bravery Cecil Williams

Wondering-Waiting-Wanting-1963

One of the museum’s most iconic images, this unidentified child holding his mother’s hand is one of Cecil Williams’ most requested photographs. It was photographed at the state capitol in Columbia during a protest against segregation and the call to remove the Confederate Flag that flew atop the cupola. The entire museum was conceived from the images and history in this publication; exclusively available from the bookstore; $100 plus tax and shipping.

South Carolina Civil Rights Museum: Vanguard of History That Shaped America

The meaning of equality in America was sharply brought into focus on May 17, 1954 when the U.S. Supreme Court ended legal segregation in public education. Now, decades later, the South Carolina Civil Rights Museum interprets the legacy of Brown v. Board of Education and South Carolina’s key role in the origin of the American Civil Rights Movement with exhibits, artifacts, books, and photos not found elsewhere.

(The Summerton, South Carolina Briggs v. Elliott case was the first and template case; this is why we advocate for the name, Briggs v. Elliott)
