Titled “Saving Lives! Student-Athlete Substance Abuse / Opioid Prevention Education,” the workshop addressed the growing opioid and fentanyl crisis and its impact on athletes—particularly in the context of injury rehabilitation. The session explored patterns of prescription and illicit drug use in sports, highlighting the risks of addiction, accidental overdoses, and fatalities among high school, collegiate, and professional athletes.
The forum also provided lifesaving education on overdose-response medications and emphasized proactive
prevention strategies, including mental health awareness, therapeutic interventions, and support systems designed to reduce high-risk behaviors among student-athletes.
“This type of education is essential for protecting the physical and mental wellbeing of our student-athletes,” said Dr. Amos. “By increasing awareness, addressing stigma, and equipping athletes and athletic staff with knowledge and resources, we can help prevent tragic and avoidable losses.”
