The Columbia Section of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) hosted its first-ever STEMMinista Academy on Saturday at Jones Memorial AME Zion Church, marking an exciting new effort to spark interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics among young African American girls.

Designed to make STEM both fun and accessible, the academy introduced participants to hands-on activities and cutting-edge technology. The opening session was led by Tenita Abraham, a certified AI consultant, who engaged the girls with an introduction to various artificial intelligence tools and applications. She emphasized the impor-

tance of using AI responsibly and taught the participants how to establish essential safety controls when exploring digital platforms.

The academy also featured a creative engineering challenge that allowed

the girls to put their criticalthinking skills to work. Using simple materials—popsicle sticks, cotton balls, and rubber bands—the participants constructed their own catapults

and aimed for a bull’s-eye target. The activity was met with excitement, teamwork, and determination as the young innovators tested and

refined their designs.

Loranda Melton, president of the Columbia Section of NCNW, expressed her delight with both the turnout
