State Treasurer recognizes Dreher High School Business Education Teacher as Educator of the Month

South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis has recognized Dreher High School business education teacher Kelly Brooks as the South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program’s Educator of the Month for January.

“We all must make financial choices in life. Without the proper financial education, people often lack an understanding of the long-range consequences of poor financial decisions,” said Loftis. “We are thankful for Ms. Brooks and like-minded educators who recognize that financial literacy is the key to strong financial health.”

Brooks has been working at Dreher since 2002, starting out part-time as a track and field coach. She became a fulltime employee at Dreher in 2004, working as an instructional assistant, school registrar and records clerk.

Brooks became a business education teacher in 2016. She says her previous experiences at Dreher helps her teach her students about financial literacy.

“With my business finance students, I have them apply some of the concepts of business finance into personal finance just to help them better understand some of those concepts. You think of yourself as a business,” said Brooks.

“A lot of my coursework, things that students learn about financial literacy, will be things they can not only use after graduation, but they can use now, whether they have a job, are applying for financial aid and scholarships or want to buy a car.”

The South Carolina

South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis has recognized Dreher High School business education teacher Kelly Brooks as the South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program’s Educator of the Month for January.

Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program provides incentives to K-12 teachers who are experts in the area of financial literacy and have a desire to teach professional development workshops to other educators in their schools and districts. Through the program participating teachers have access to specialized training and financial literacy curriculum resources that better enable them to promote financial literacy education in K-12 schools.

Sponsored by Future Scholar, South Carolina’s 529 College Savings Plan, and in partnership with SC Economics, this statewide financial literacy initiative aims to increase teacher support and involvement in incorporating personal finance education into the curriculum.
