State Senator Ronnie Sabb receives Voorhees University’s Keeper of the Flame Award

Voorhees University recently honored South Carolina State Senator Ronnie A. Sabb during ceremonies of the Presidential Scholarship Gala on April 6, 2024. The state senator, representing the 32nd district of South Carolina, was bestowed the prestigious Keeper of the Flame Award in appreciation for his remarkable contributions and unwavering commitment to his alma mater. Currently residing in Kingstree, the Greeleyville native graduated from Voorhees in 1980 and has played a pivotal role in nurturing excellence at the institution since, including a generous donation of $100,000 in 2023.

The annual gala, held at the Leonard Dawson Health and Human Resource Center on the Voorhees Campus, provided the platform to honor Senator Sabb alongside the remarkable accomplishments of 24 Presidential Scholars. The scholars exemplify the pinnacle of academic achievement and leadership at Voorhees. Led by their collective grade point average of 3.50, with eleven students maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA, they have set an extraordinary benchmark for scholastic

accomplishment. Additionally, their diverse backgrounds, including eighteen talented Sophomores and 10 International students, enrich the university community with a wealth of perspectives and experiences.

In presenting the award to Senator Sabb, Dr. Ronnie Hopkins, president of Voorhees University, expressed thanks “not only for your major contribution this year, but for the previous years of support to Voorhees University. Whenever we need you, you are always there. Thank you for keeping the flame fueled.”
