A core group of students from St. Martin DePorres Catholic School, engaged in an extracurricular mentoring initiative with reading as the foundation. A program developed and implemented by Christopher Davis included members of the Allen University Yellow Jacket Football Team.
This phase of the program will culminate with Tito Hannah on December 16, 2025 @ 2 {: } 0 0 PM who remembers his humble athletic abilities developing in his hometown of Marion, SC. Hannah who now lives in Columbia SC will share his journey with this group of kids who have been reading Rise Of The Black Quarterback by Jeff Reid. Some of the kids will also present a brief synopsis on a character in the book orally.
While this phase concludes a holiday phase launches. This phase seeks black men across SC, NC, GA and abroad to adopt a young person or persons especially black boys to read with no less than thirty minutes per day. Preferably short stories and children’s books written by black
authors.
This has become a challenge which means various pieces of information need to be submitted and calculated. This is extremely important for black dads and mentors to engage in reading with their kids and community kids especially during the holidays for numerous reasons relating to educational equity, cultural empowerment, and long term development.
The holidays often provide extended breaks from structured schooling. Using this time for reading enhancement through challenges prevent not on a holiday slide, but a summer slide. While vocabulary is built, reading skills etc., to include critical thinking skills, simply endures kids return to school better prepared.
Several Midlands dads and mentors have already registered for the next phase, and are looking at the MLK Day Phase as well.
