South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto, was be bestowed upon Diane E. Sumpter during a special ceremony and celebration on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 at The Meeting Place Community Center in Columbia, South Carolina.
The Order of the Palmetto is awarded by the Governor of South Carolina to individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary lifetime achievement, service, and contributions to the state and its people. Ms. Sumpter is being recognized for her enduring leadership, community impact, and unwavering commitment to service that has positively influenced countless lives across South Carolina.
The ceremony featured official remarks from elected officials, community leaders, and family representatives, as well as a formal presentation
of the Order of the Palmetto certificate by Senator Darrell Jackson. A tribute video highlighting Ms. Sumpter’s legacy and lifelong service was also presented.
The Order of the Palmetto ceremony is by invitation and brings together leaders from government, business, faith, and civic organizations to celebrate one of South Carolina’s most distinguished citizens.

The Order of the Palmetto is South Carolina’s highest civilian award, recognizing individuals whose achievements and service have had a lasting impact on the state. Eligibility for the Order of the Palmetto is limited to adult natives of South Carolina. Individuals must be formally nominated in writing, and the award is conferred only once in a lifetime.
