South Carolina Historical Society to host virtual lecture focusing on ancestral stories of slavery and their enslavers

The South Carolina Historical Society invites you to engage in a profound examination of the complex histories surrounding slavery, viewed through the lenses of both the descendants of the enslaved and those of the enslavers and traders. Virginia Ellison, the Chief Operating Officer and Director of Collections, will facilitate this important dialogue featuring South Carolina authors Dr. Walter Curry and Margaret Seidler. This discussion aims to delve into the enduring legacies of these intertwined histories, focusing on their remembrance, interpretation, and visual representation in contemporary society.

In this enlightening session, the authors will share insights from their extensive family research conducted within various private and public archival collections across South Carolina and beyond. They will investigate the ways in which descendants of enslaved individuals actively preserve and convey their ancestors’ narratives, ensuring that these stories remain a vital part of the his-

torical discourse. Additionally, the conversation will address the challenges faced by descendants of enslavers as they confront the implications of their ancestors’ actions and the historical context in which they occurred.

This exploration promises to foster a rich dialogue that not only acknowledges the painful past but also seeks to understand its impact on present-day identities and relationships. By bringing together diverse perspectives, the session aims to create a space for reflection and understanding,

encouraging participants to consider how these histories shape our collective memory and influence ongoing discussions about race, heritage, and reconciliation in South Carolina and beyond.
