South Carolina ETV and Public Radio (SCETV) will honor the 10-year anniversary of the 2015 tragedy at Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Charleston through a series of special programs and community engagement efforts under the theme Never Forgotten: The Emanuel Nine.
Beginning this month, SCETV will launch a community storytelling initiative, Voices Collected, to preserve the voices and memories connected to the Emanuel Nine as well as to place emphasis on healing, legacy and impact. SCETV invites South Carolinians and others around the country to share reflections and memories online or in-person at scheduled events. These collected voices — via audio, video or written submissions— will be curated for use in broadcast, podcast, social media and educational materials. For information on how to schedule your recording session at the ETV studios or an upcoming event, or to submit your story online, visit the SCETV website.
In addition to the Voices Collected initiative, SCETV’s broadcast and digital platforms will feature dedicated programming throughout June. News reports and features through programs like This Week in South Carolina and the South Carolina Lede will honor the lives lost, exploring the continued work of justice and reconciliation. A
televised broadcast special is also scheduled to premiere on ETV on June 19 at 8 \mathrm { p. m } The special will also be available to stream on the SCETV website, the SCETV App or by using the PBS App.
Additionally, SCETV is collaborating with church and youth organizations to support youth engagement and reflection around the commemoration.
On June 17, 2015, nine worshippers were killed, and one was injured during a Bible study at the historic Mother Emanuel AME Church– the oldest Black church in the South. This tragedy sparked conversation and movements across the state and country.
As the state and nation reflect on the legacy of the Emanuel Nine, SCETV is committed to creating space for remembrance, reflection and healing through broadcast and digital content as well as civic community dialogue.
