This summer, six Midlands Technical College (MTC) dual enrollment students from Richland School District Two were selected to become youth apprentices with Prisma Health. Through the Midlands Youth Apprenticeship Program, an innovative earn-and-learn model, these students will work as paid nursing support apprentices while completing their junior and senior years of high school.

This year marks the third cohort of Richland Two students to sign an apprenticeship with Prisma Health. The six students in the newest cohort are:
· Gabrielle Davis, Westwood High School
· Amaya Gardner, Westwood High School
· Kyra Hicks, Blythewood High School
· Betty Lawer, Blythewood High School
· Taylor Macon, Ridge View High School
· Teresia Massawe, Blythewood High School
Each student navigated a highly competitive selection process that required developing professional resumes, writing cover letters, securing references, and participating in formal interviews.
The apprenticeship program is a collaborative partnership between Richland School District Two, Prisma Health, Apprenticeship Carolina, and Midlands Technical College. Designed for students in
the pre-nursing pathway, the program provides real-world clinical experience and direct training to prepare them for high-demand healthcare careers.
Jenniferr Cain is the Director of College and Career Initiatives for Richland Two. “Together we’re helping bridge the gap between the classroom and workplace and ensuring that our students graduate not only with knowledge, but meaningful experiences,” said Cain.
Apprentices balance a rigorous schedule that includes concurrent enrollment in high school courses and MTC college classes alongside their employment at Prisma Health.
During the official signing day ceremony, Chelsea Chestnut, Nursing Academic Services Manager, Prisma Health and leaders from partner organizations celebrated the students’ dedication and the program’s impact.
“The students will learn how to interact with patients, support the care team, and develop foundational patient care skills. They also gain valuable soft skills that extend far beyond the clinical setting,” Chestnut said.
The program starts this month.
