Several local doctors were honored at the Palme…

Several local doctors were honored at the Palmetto, Medical Dental & Pharmaceutical Association’s annual conference, held on April 25 in Greenville, SC. Many honorees were honored for a half century of providing health care to the community.

Dr. Albert Humphrey (top left), was honored for 50 years of service to

humanity, family and community, as well as the Palmetto Medical, Dental, and Pharmaceutical Association.

Dr. Gerald Wilson (top right) was also honored for 50 years of service.

In addition, Dr. Burnett Gallman (bottom left) was honored 50 years of service to humanity, family and community.

Dr. Rodney Reid

(bottom right) was given a plaque of appreciation for his service to the National Medical Association’s Board of Trustees Region III.

In addition. Columbiabased OB/GVN Dr. Deborah Davis was named the 2025 South Carolina Doctor of the Year. (See photo and article in April 30 issue of this newspaper).

The Palmetto Medical,

Dental, and Pharmaceutical Association (PMDPA) represents the South Carolina component of the National Medical Association, the National Dental Association and the National Pharmaceutical Association. PMDPA is committed to its goal of decreasing minority healthcare disparities and improving health care in South Carolina.

University of South Carolina head women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley was honored last week when city officials unveiled a new statue. The statue depicts Staley cutting down the news of a basketball goal, a long-held tradition for teams that win championships.

During her 17 seasons at South Carolina, she has led the Lady Gamecocks to nine SEC regular season championships, nine SEC tournament championships, eight Sweet Sixteens, six Final Fours, and three NCAA women’s basketball national championships, including the school’s first in 2017 and a perfect season in 2024.

Dawn Staley’s statue unveiling was held Wednesday, April 30, 2025 at the corner of Senate and Lincoln Streets. Many dignitaries came out to pay tribute to Coach Staley, such as the CEO of Aflac, Columbia City Manager Theresa Wilson, and Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott.
