State Senator Darrell Jackson Sr. (D–Richland) has introduced S.1040, a concurrent resolution requesting that the South Carolina Department of Transportation designate a portion of Interstate 77 in Richland County as the “President Barack H. Obama Highway.”

The resolution calls for the stretch of I-77 between U.S. Highway 1 and Interstate 20 to be named in honor of President Barack H. Obama, recognizing his historic presidency as the first African American to serve as President of the United States and his leadership during a pivotal time in the nation’s history.

“President Obama’s leadership inspired a generation and broke barriers that once seemed impossible,” said Sen. Jackson. Designating this highway in his honor is a meaningful way for South Carolina to recognize his legacy and the impact he has had on our country.”

If approved, the South Carolina Department of Transportation would install appropriate markers along the designated portion of the highway.
