SCETV produces new short film profiling awardwinning comic artist Sanford Greene for “HBCU Week NOW”

South Carolina ETV and Public Radio (SCETV) has produced a new short film titled Still Here for the national HBCU Week NOW initiative. Now available on YouTube, the film follows the journey of artist and educator Sanford Greene, from his beginnings in Greeleyville, S.C., to his acclaimed career in the global comic industry and his ultimate return to Benedict College, a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) located in Columbia, S.C., where he now teaches and mentors aspiring artists.

A collaboration between SCETV and HBCU Week NOW, Still Here follows Greene’s path from discovering comics as a child to studying art and illustration at Benedict College, to teaching illustration based on his career at his Alma Marta. Greene has since illustrated iconic Marvel characters in Luke Cage and Black Panther, contributed artwork to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and cocreated the Eisner and Ringo award-winning Image Comics series Bitter Root, which is currently being adapted into a feature film for Legendary Entertainment.

The short film highlights Greene’s continued ties to Benedict College, emphasizing his commitment to cultivating the next generation of storytellers. His role as an instructor and mentor reflects the institution’s mission to provide exceptional educational opportunities and inspire students to serve as “a power for good in society” as envisioned by founder Bathsheba A. Benedict.

Still Here is part of HBCU

Week NOW’s fall collection of short films, which spotlight the impact of HBCUs through stories of innovation, resilience and artistic excellence. Additional titles in the collection include Unity and Hope: The Pride of HBCU (WXXI), The Art of Dance: Complexions (Howard University/WHUT), Fashion Forward (PBS North Carolina) and Beyond the Movement (Spelman College/ WABE Atlanta). All films are now streaming on the HBCU Week NOW YouTube (@channel).

HBCU Week NOW is made possible through a public media partnership led by Maryland Public Television.
