South Carolina State University announces the appointment of April Thomas as director of its Undergraduate Research Office.
A dedicated advocate for student development and community advancement, Thomas brings more than a decade of leadership experience in educational support, community partnerships and research operations.
A native of Orangeburg, South Carolina, Thomas is a two-time graduate of SC State, earning a Bachelor of Arts in professional English and a Master of Arts in rehabilitation counseling.
Her appointment reflects a meaningful homecoming to the institution that shaped her academic and professional foundation.
“April’s deep community roots, operational expertise and passion for student development make her an exceptional addition to South Carolina State University. Under her direction, the Undergraduate Research Office will continue to open doors of opportunity and expand the impact of research across our campus and community,” said Dr. Frederick M. Evans, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.
Thomas previously served nearly 15 years with the James E. Clyburn Scholarship and Research Foundation, progressing through several leadership roles and most recently serving as director of operations and community development. During her tenure, she helped provide scholarship opportunities to more than 1,800 students and supported initiatives that generated over $6 million in educational funding. Her work included managing organizational operations, strengthening community partnerships, coordinating large-scale outreach efforts and leading projects that expanded student access and academic success.
In addition to her extensive professional experience, Thomas is a published contributor to academic research. Her co-authored work, “Historically Black Colleges and
Universities (HBCUs): The Impact of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Resources,” was presented at the Aramid International Student Symposium and published on ResearchGate. Her scholarly interests center on educational equity, digital access and the evolving needs of historically marginalized communities.
Thomas also maintains a strong commitment to service. She serves on the board of The Samaritan House of Orangeburg County Inc., supporting strategic planning, donor engagement and outreach initiatives. She is certified in Mental Health First Aid USA and remains active in faith-based service, youth mentorship and community development.
As director of the Undergraduate Research Office, Thomas will provide leadership and strategic oversight for expanding undergraduate research opportunities across campus. She will guide efforts to strengthen faculty-student research engagement, increase interdisciplinary participation, enhance research readiness and support SC State’s progress toward maintaining its Carnegie Research Two (High Research Activity) designation.
