SC State Alumni Band to host Annual Concert Gala

The South Carolina State Alumni Band Association will host the 2nd Annual Concert Gala on Friday, May 17, 2024 at 7:00 pm. The event will be held at The Medallion Conference Center 7309 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, SC 29209. This year’s featured performer and one of the seven honorees will be H. Wade Johnson, former SCSU Assistant Band Director and current Director of Band at Benedict College “Tiger”

Marching Band

  • H. Wade Johnson (79) is a native of McClellanville,

South Carolina. He earned his Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Instrumental Music Education and Secondary Counseling at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg and a Masters Degree in Jazz Education from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, Illinois. Professor Johnson is currently the Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. He has performed with the late John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie (his musical idol), The Temptations, Fred Wesley and

the New JB’s (currently), The Hawkins Family, Marvin Sapp and many other artists.

All proceeds from the Concert Gala will go to support the students of the South Carolina State University Band Programs which encompasses all university sponsored bands.
