SC Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics Expands Summer Camps to 14 Locations Statewide

GoSciTech Day Camps now accessible to more families across the Palmetto State

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) is excited to announce the expansion of its popular summer day camps to four additional technical colleges across the state. This expansion is part of GSSM’s ongoing commitment to making STEM education more accessible to students in South Carolina.

The GSSM GoSciTech Day camps are designed for rising 6th through 8th graders and provide hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). These four-day programs run from Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 {: } 0 0 \mathrm { p. m. } , and focus on developing problem-solving and teamwork skills through exciting explorations in engineering, human biology, coding, and more. The camps are hosted at technical colleges across the state, creating opportunities for students to engage in high-quality STEM learning close to home.

“The GoSciTech Day camps offer students a hands-on introduction to STEM that can spark a lifelong passion for learning,” said Susan Engelhardt, outreach director of summer programs. “Through our partnerships with technical colleges, we’re able to bring these enriching experiences closer to home for students across South Carolina, especially in rural and underserved areas. It’s exciting to see students not only dive into STEM but also connect with like-minded peers who share their interests. For families seeking a summer program that challenges students to think creatively and solve real-world problems, GoSciTech is the perfect fit.”

Voorhees University Student selected for prestigious internship with SC Department of Public Health

Voorhees University proudly announces that Ashanti Wright, a Senior Child Development major and Student Health Ambassador, has been selected for a paid internship with the South Carolina Department of Public Health (SC DPH). Ashanti is one of only 10 students across the state chosen for this highly competitive opportunity.

As part of her role with SC DPH, Ashanti will serve as an HIV Prevention Champion on the Voorhees University campus. Her responsibilities include promoting HIV prevention and awareness among her peers, collaborating with community partners to organize testing events, and advocating for public health initiatives.

“We are incredibly proud of Ashanti for earning this prestigious opportunity,” said Suzanne Williams, Director of Health Services at Voorhees University. “Her selection is a testament to her dedication to public health and her leadership on campus. This internship will not only allow her to make a significant impact in our community but also prepare her for a future as a public health advocate in any setting.”

The internship, which will take place during the Spring 2025 semester (January– April), provides Ashanti with a platform to make a meaningful impact in her community. There is also a potential for the internship to be extended into the Summer or Fall 2025 terms.

This opportunity highlights Ashanti’s commitment to public health and reflects Voorhees University’s dedication to fostering student leadership and community engagement.
