In celebration of Workforce Development Month, the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce (SC DEW) hosted a successful event at Voorhees University. The event, spearheaded by Ricky Clemons, the Business Workforce Development Liaison at Voorhees University, and Ms. Donna Miller, Business Consultant for SC DEW, focused on equipping students and community members with the tools and access they need to succeed in the competitive job market.

Through workshops designed to enhance resume writing, self-representation at career fairs, and connections to job opportunities and

community resources, both students and local residents were able to benefit from the day’s activities. The event saw significant participation, with 17 employers, 22 community organizations, and 319 attendees.

Ms. Donna Miller, Business Consultant for SC DEW, emphasized the impact of the collaboration, stating, “Because of our partnership with Voorhees University, this event was a tremendous success. The participation of both employers and community organizations enabled us to offer valuable support to students and local community members.”

Ms. Tameka Johnson,

Regional Manager for SC DEW’s Lower Savannah Region, added, “SC Works is proud of the partnerships we’ve developed and looks forward to continuing our collaboration with Voorhees University, Mr. Clemons, and the Rural Community Development Institute. Together, we will help even more students and community members succeed.”

Cathy Scarborough, Founding Director of the Rural Community Development Institute, also shared her thoughts: “We are thrilled to have been a part of this initiative. Empowering students and the community through workforce development is at the heart of what we do. It is through these types of events that we can connect people to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive in today’s workforce.”

SC Works centers, located across South Carolina, are dedicated to providing jobseekers with the resources they need to find employment. These services include career readiness assessments, oneon-one career guidance, and access to the state’s largest workforce database.
