Richland Two educator named finalist for AVID Global Achievement Award

Richland School District Two is proud to announce that Kim Hutcherson has been named a finalist for the prestigious AVID Global Achievement Awards. These awards, celebrating AVID’s 45th anniversary, recognize exceptional leaders and teams who embody the AVID mission of advancing college and career readiness for all students through high expectations, rigorous instruction, and unwavering support.

Kim Hutcherson, Director of Student Services and former principal of the Center for Achievement, has been named a finalist for Elementary Principal of the Year.

Richland Two offers AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination in elementary through high school grades. Its purpose is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society. The dedication of these educators reflects the district’s long-standing commitment to the AVID program.

“AVID has been part of Richland Two’s instructional DNA for more than 25 years, positively impacting thousands of our students with high-quality instruction and opportunities beyond the classroom,” said Jeffrey McMicken, Richland Two AVID Coordinator. “I am so

proud of the hard work and dedication to student success that Kim Hutcherson and Faith Kendall have shown at the elementary level that sets our students up for success in college, career, and life.”

“It is a true honor to be named a finalist for AVID’s Global Achievement Award for Elementary Principal of the Year,” stated Hutcherson. “I am grateful for the opportunity to advance AVID’s mission in Richland Two by championing whole-child centered practices that work to close the opportunity gap and support students on their path to college and career success. I am humbled and deeply appreciative of this recognition.”

AVID focus areas are writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading which are often called WICOR strategies. Other areas of focus are critical thinking and study skills, time management and goal setting, and college and career exploration. Richland Two offers AVID elective classes and AVID strategies are also often schoolwide, meaning teachers across subjects use AVID methods to improve engagement and rigor.

Award winners will be revealed at the AVID Global Achievement Awards ceremony on December 11 in San Diego, CA.
