Katherine Myers announced her candidacy for Richland County School District One Board of Commissioners Seat 2. Myers is the owner of Myers Law Firm, an adjunct professor at Benedict College, and a proud product of Richland County School District One. Deeply committed to the community that nurtured her, Myers is running on a platform dedicated to supporting local educators, amplifying student voices, and ensuring educational excellence across all schools in the district.
Myers’ connection to Richland One is personal, profound, and lifelong. She attended Watkins Elementary, W.A. Perry Middle School, and C.A. Johnson Preparatory Academy. At C.A. Johnson, she graduated as class valedictorian in 2006 and served as Student Council president, played basketball, qualified for the State Championship in track, and was active in the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Her academic excellence earned her a full scholarship to Furman University as a Herman Lay Scholar. There, she majored in political science, helped found the university’s first-ever NAACP chapter, received the Best Attorney Award in Mock Trial, and participated in the Shucker Leadership Institute. She subsequently earned her Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2013.
Currently in her 12th year as a licensed attorney, Myers has tried over 20 jury trials, demonstrating a career-long dedication to justice and advocacy. She began her legal career as a judicial law clerk for retired Chief Justice Donald Beatty of the South Carolina Supreme Court. Recognizing her passion for trial litigation, she then served as an Assistant Solicitor in the First Judicial Circuit in Orangeburg, SC, where she spent three years prosecuting domestic violence and DUI cases. Myers later founded the Myers Law Firm to focus on areas of law she is most passionate about. Her extensive legal career also includes critical public service roles, including serving as a Public Defender in Richland County and as an attorney for the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR), before returning to lead her private practice full-time.
Throughout her career, Attorney Myers has enjoyed giving back to the Richland One community through speaking at Richland One schools, churches and events, serving as a panel member, coaching and judging mock trials, hosting virtual workshops and previous service events with the Young Lawyers Division of the South Carolina Bar. Her dedication has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Key to the City, the Young Lawyers President’s Award, the SC Black Pages Top 20 under 40, the SC Biz News Icons & Phenoms Award, and most recently, the Civil Star Award from the Richland County Bar.
Myers’ campaign also honors a strong family legacy in public education. She is the daughter of the late Dr. Kenneth Myers, Sr., who served on the Spartanburg County School Board, and Mrs. Emma McGraw Myers Bailey, MSW. Myers is a 30-year member of First Nazareth Baptist Church, an 18-year member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and an active member of its Columbia-based graduate chapter, Gamma Nu Omega.
“It’s time and I’m excited,” Myers says. “Richland One teachers, principals, guidance counselors, coaches, lunch ladies, custodial staff and superintendents shaped me into the person I am. And I want to lend my experience to continue to ensure that young people not only have dreams but also the tools to achieve them.”
