Lecture, Family Celebration and 40th Anniversary Commemoration

Richland Library will celebrate the enduring legacy of Augusta Baker with a series of special events, including the 7th Annual Augusta Baker Lecture, A Celebration of Stories for Families, and a 40th anniversary commemoration recognizing Baker’s lasting impact on literacy, storytelling and diverse literature. These events highlight Baker’s influence as a pioneering librarian and storyteller whose work continues to inspire readers and families across generations.

The 7th Annual Augusta Baker Lecture featuring Emely Rumble will take place Friday, April 17, 2026, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Richland Library Main. Licensed clinical social worker and author Emely Rumble will join Augusta Baker Endowed Chair Dr. Nicole A. Cooke for a conversation exploring bibliotherapy, mental wellness and the transformative power of reading. Rumble will discuss her book Bibliotherapy in the Bronx, her work expanding access to mental health resources and the role of literature in healing and self-discovery. A book signing and reception will follow.

Richland Library will also host A Celebration of Stories for Families with Natalie Daise on Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Richland Library Main. Families are invited to experience songs, stories and interactive moments led by special guest Natalie Daise, performer, author and former Gullah Gullah Island co-star. Award-winning actor and children’s literacy advocate Darion McCloud will join as featured storyteller, bringing dynamic performance and theatrical storytelling to the celebration. A book signing will follow the program.
