Richland Library and Gamecock Football celebrate 30 years of Pigskin Poets

For three decades, Richland Library and the University of South Carolina football program have teamed up to inspire a love of reading among Midlands children. This summer, families are invited to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Pigskin Poets, a cherished community tradition that brings together books, football and unforgettable memories.

The free event will take place from 3–4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 17, 2026, at the Spurrier Indoor Practice Facility, located at 20 National Guard Road in Columbia.

Children and families are encouraged to wear their favorite Gamecock gear and join University of South Carolina football players for an afternoon of storytelling, games, photos and autograph sessions. Following the reading activities, players will be available to sign keepsake posters and pose for photos with attendees.

For 30 years, Pigskin Poets has highlighted the importance of literacy and lifelong learning by connecting young readers with student-athletes who serve as positive role models. Over the years, hundreds of Midlands children have participated in the program, which combines the excitement of Gamecock football with the joy of reading.

Last year, players made a memorable entrance to the sounds of cheering fans, “2001” and “Sandstorm,” bringing the energy of a fall football Saturday to a summer literacy event. Organizers expect this year’s anniversary celebration to be equally exciting.
