The Richland County Education Association-Retired awarded two $ 20000.00 scholarships to high school seniors to assist them in pursuing careers in education. The presentations were made at the organization’s June 12th Scholarship Luncheon held at Seawell’s Restaurant on Rosewood Drive.

The award was presented to Tyson Ray, Jr. from Chapin High School, and Nathaniel Alford from Lower Richland High School. These outstanding students excelled academically and are very enthusiastic about becoming teachers to

give back to their community and make a difference in the lives of young people as professional educators.

“It is RCEA-R’s mission to invest in our future educators. The members of RCEA-R take great pride in its scholarship program and the assistance it provides in helping students pursue their college dreams,” said Ida Thompson, RCEA-R President. Our schools and teachers need talented educators, and this is our way of assisting in that effort.”

Making the presentation was Dr. Toyletta Riley, Scholarship Committee Chairperson and Committee members Dr. Dorothy Gallman, Helen Jones, Geraldine Parker, Earlene Howell-Smith and Elizabeth Ayers. RCEA-R President Ida W. Thompson, parents of Tyson Ray and Kiara Alford, sister of Nathaniel Alford, also joined the presentation.

Retired educators and school personnel, both certified and classified in the midlands area are invited to join RCEA-R and lend their support and talents to the group. Interested persons are welcome and asked to contact the association at RCEARColumbia@gmail.com.
