Richland County Councilman Overture Walker has filed for re-election to Richland County Council, District 8, seeking his second term.
Walker initially ran to help restore public confidence in county government and make it more effective in delivering services and conducting the people’s business. “I have worked hard to live up to those standards, and I firmly believe the county operates more openly and in a much more collaborative and productive manner,” said Walker.
“Instead of getting bogged down in meaningless debates or questionable council practices, our focus is on delivering quality services and increasing economic development to improve the quality of life for all residents,” said Walker. “The result,” he adds, “Is that the people have a government they can trust.”
Richland County has a Triple-A credit rating and has consistently received high marks for its financial management. Additionally, there has not been a general fund tax increase for six straight years. “The proof is in the pudding,” declares Walker. “Just look at how solid our finances are and the economic development projects that have been announced.”
Last year was arguably the county’s best in history as it relates to economic development, highlighted by Scout Motors’ announcement that it will build a $ 2 billion, 4,000-employee automotive assembly plant in Richland County. This is a project that has the potential to transform the region. “Not only will this record growth improve the lives of today’s county residents, but generations of Richland County residents yet to be born will benefit from these amazing investments. And I believe there is more to come,” said Walker.
land County Council, Walker – a Columbia attorney, small business owner, and former municipal judge – has served as council chair and on various council committees. His priorities include economic development, promoting “smart” growth, improving transportation, and relieving traffic congestion, supporting public education, keeping the county’s library system elite, bolstering community safety, and protecting neighborhoods.
