Just like the road it sits on, “The Little Church On The Hill” is aiming to expand. Rehoboth Baptist Church, at 4646 Hard Scrabble Road in Columbia, will be celebrating 145 years of rich history next month as it develops plans to expand its reach into the community.
Pastor Ivory T. Thigpen and the Rehoboth Baptist Church Family invite everyone to come out for the 145th Anniversary services at 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Sunday, February 11, 2024. The theme is “Good Stewards of God’s Grace!” and Scripture is 1 Peter 4:10: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (NIV)
The history of Rehoboth Baptist Church extends back to 1879, when a small group of courageous African-American believers came together in Ridgeway, S.C. In the late 1980s, the Ridgeway Mining Company planned an expansion that included the immediate land surrounding Rehoboth’s then location. This expansion brought about a search for a new location for Rehoboth, hence the move to Hard Scrabble Road.
The church is currently moving forward with a capital campaign to grow its campus as the community around it grows. “Rehoboth is dedicated to serving the community,” Pastor Thigpen says. The church has a Child Development Center and Family Life Center. It has acquired the property at 4645 Hard Scrabble Road. Plans for that property are still being developed.
