“Early detection is crucial in achieving the best possible outcomes,” said Dr. Mariangela Rivera, a Prisma Health general surgeon. “These screenings that we offer are free, quick and painless. They are non-invasive and can catch cancer early.”
This year, South Carolina is estimated to have 1,400 new cases of oral, head and neck cancers diagnosed. This includes cancers of the voice box, throat, mouth, nose, sinuses and salivary glands. These types of cancers account for 4 percent of all cancers in the
United States and are most likely to be diagnosed in individuals over the age of 50.
As part of Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month in April, Prisma Health is hosting free screenings in the Upstate and the Midlands. Appointments are recommended but walk-ins also will be welcome as timing allows.
Columbia Screening Event will be held on April 19, 2024 from 8 a.m.–1 p.m. at Prisma Health Baptist Hospital, 1501 Sumter Street. Beaman Auditorium
