U.S. Presidential candidate Dr. Cornel West was in the Midlands on Friday, June 8. He was invited to speak at a luncheon hosted by the Columbia Branch NAACP. The luncheon was held at the Brookland Baptist Conference Center in West Columbia.
“We wanted to make sure he was heard before he left town,” said Columbia SC NAACP Branch President Oveta Glover. “He is a presidential candidate for 2024 and will be on the ballot in South Carolina in November. The NAACP is non-partisan, but we believe that everyone should have an opportunity to share their voice and say what their endeavors are.”
During the luncheon, Dr. West explored several issues facing Americans in general, and African-Americans in particular. Most of the conversation centered around the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of opposition, and the continuous struggle for justice throughout history.
“South Carolina is ground zero in the struggle for freedom,” said Dr. West, “from Mary McCleod Bethune to Benjamin Elijah Mays all the way up to James Brown. My soul is always rejuvenated

when I come to South Carolina.”
West emphasized the need for unity and solidarity in the face of adversity, while also highlighting the importance of preserving one’s calling and identity. Moral and spiritual greatness were discussed, with a focus on recognizing the limitations of one’s own perspective and learning from others. Humility and kindness were also seen as crucial in this pursuit.
“We must empower those which my Christian tradition calls ‘the least of these.’ We must zero in on the plight of the poor and working people and not be distracted by the
actions of billionaires and millionaires.”
West went on to say that he was inspired to run on behalf of young people and wants to help the people who can love in the face of hatred and still change the world.
After the speech, Dr. West thanked Brookland Baptist Church Pastor Rev. Dr. Charles B. Jackson for hosting the luncheon.
“I salute Rev. Charles Jackson Sr.,” said Dr. West. “He has been a servant of the people for 53 magnificent years.
