COMMENTARY
Eight years ago, my daughters came home from college. They were 18 and 20, and eligible to vote in their first presidential election. Since they could not vote on election day, I drove them to the county election office so they could vote in advance.
They were NOT happy with their choices – Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump. I told them that this year was an anomaly.
“America is a great country,” I said. “We usually don’t have to choose between horse (expletive) and dog (expletive).”
At the time, I didn’t know that I was lying.
As things stand today, Americans are facing the nightmare scenario – a rematch between former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden. It says something about the state of our country that our choice is between two men that the vast majority of Americans detest.
Poll after poll has revealed that Americans don’t want Biden or Trump to lead this nation. Most Americans believe that both men are too old. Many believe that Biden is not mentally fit to serve, and that Trump is not morally fit to serve. But here we are — facing the dismal prospect of an eight month media onslaught featuring Biden and Trump. What did we do to deserve this?
The American people are responsible for this. We went out and voted for these two gentlemen. Gone are the days when the major parties selected their candidates in smoke-filled rooms.
It is often said that America gets the President it deserves. What did we do to deserve this?
