The Orangeburg Branch of the NAACP will hold its 30th Annual Freedom Fund Celebration on Saturday, August 23, at 4:00 p.m. at Edisto Fork United Methodist Church Christian Life Center, located at 356 Lariot Road, Highway 301 South.
This year’s theme, “The Fierce Urgency of Now,” will underscore the importance of civic engagement, social justice, and unity in the ongoing fight for equality.
The keynote speaker will be The Honorable Michael R. Morgan, retired Senior Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina.
Barbara Johnson-Williams, President of the Orangeburg Branch NAACP, said: “This is a milestone year for our branch, and we are honored to have Justice Morgan share his powerful story and vision. His life’s work embodies the courage, persistence, and leadership needed in these urgent times.”
About Michael R. Morgan
Michael R. Morgan is a retired Senior Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina and a trailblazing jurist who made history as the only
person in state history to hold four different judgeships. A native of Cherry Point, N.C., he integrated Trent Park Elementary School in 1964 as an eightyear-old and went on to earn degrees from Duke University and North Carolina Central University School of Law. His distinguished career includes service as an Administrative Law Judge, District Court Judge, Superior Court Judge, and finally, Associate Justice of the state’s highest court. Upon retiring in 2023, he ran for Governor of North Carolina in the 2024 election cycle, finishing second in the Democratic primary. Justice Morgan and his wife, Audrey, reside in Raleigh and are active members of Amanah Rush A.M.E. Zion Church.
