At the Orangeburg County School District’s board meeting on November 12, 2024, the district unveiled its prestigious Superintendent Medal of Excellence, recognizing individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to the district and community through their dedication to education. This new award celebrates the legacy of those who have tirelessly worked to improve student achievement and foster a positive educational environment.
The inaugural recipients of the Superintendent Medal of Excellence include five outstanding individuals: Dr. David Longshore, Mr. Melvin
Smoak, Rev. Dr. R.L. Brown, Mrs. Vernell Goodwin, and Mrs. Peggy James-Tyler (posthumously). Each of these honorees has played a pivotal role in shaping the district’s educational landscape and has left a lasting mark on generations of students.
This award not only acknowledges their professional accomplishments but also honors the spirit of commitment and service that has defined their careers. The district has witnessed firsthand the transformative power of their work, whether it was through their leadership in the classroom, in district offices, or as advocates for educational equity.
“Recognizing these individuals is a reminder of the powerful influence that education has on our community. Their contributions have shaped the lives of countless students and continue to inspire those of us who follow in their footsteps. We are proud to honor their legacies today,” said Dr. Shawn D. Foster, OCSD Superintendent.
The Superintendent Medal of Excellence will be an annual tradition to honor those who continue to leave an indelible impact on the district’s mission of promoting educational excellence and student success.
