Clyburn also stated that he is NOT the first African-American to serve in Congress from South Carolina. He is the ninth. The first eight served during the Reconstruction Era after the Civil War. He is currently writing a book about them and their accomplishments.

“I’m writing my third

book, and it’s called The First Eight,” Clyburn said. “It’s about these eight people and the contributions they made to this country.”

Clyburn said that it is critical that Black people teach Black history instead of relying on the school system. He recalled about how his parents taught history in his home and how during his early years working as a teacher in Charleston, he used Black history to keep his students interested in education.

“Every school ought to be providing a good learning experience,” Clyburn said.

After the luncheon, Clyburn and Devine answered

numerous questions from the audience.
