South Carolina State University President Alexander Conyers has appointed experienced corporate attorney Nashiba Boyd as the university’s general counsel.
“Ms. Boyd brings to SC State demonstrated capability in civil law as both an expert advisor in legal matters and as a successful litigator,” Conyers said. “Given the complexities of our missions in education, research and outreach, her experience and knowledge are essential assets for the university.”
The SC State Office of General Counsel (OGC) provides legal advice to the university’s Board of Trustees, administrators, faculty, and staff regarding legal matters affecting or involving the university. The office also aids the SC State administration in the formulation of university policies.
The OGC also handles all requests for information under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), background checks from federal agents, and subpoenas.
“I am thrilled to be joining South Carolina State University as General Counsel. It is an honor to join an institution that is committed to academic excellence, innovation,
and community engagement,” Boyd said. “In my role, I look forward to using my 20 years of experience to provide strategic legal guidance that supports the university’s mission and values.”
Boyd said her primary goals include:
-
Enhancing legal compliance: She aims to ensure that SC State operates within the legal framework while fostering a culture of compliance and ethical conduct.
-
Facilitating collaborative partnerships: She intends to work closely with faculty, staff, and students to address legal issues proactively, fostering collaboration across the university.
-
Navigating emerging legal challenges: As higher education faces evolving legal landscapes, she is committed to staying ahead of trends to protect the university’s interests and mission.
“I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to contributing to South Carolina State University’s continued success,” Boyd said. “Thank you to everyone who has supported me along this journey. Together, I believe we can navigate the complexities of higher education law and further enhance the university’s legacy.”
