The Harlem Globetrotters will celebrate their 100th anniversary during this touring season, marking a historic milestone in sports and entertainment. South Carolinians have an extra reason to be proud, as Lexington, South Carolina native Tauris Watson will take the court as a rookie with the Washington Generals, the Globetrotters’ longtime touring opponents.
Watson says he is excited and grateful for the opportunity. “I’ve been playing basketball from the crib,” he shared. “My dad put a ball in my crib when I came home.”
Watson is a native of Lexington, South Carolina.
As a rookie, Watson is learning the ropes of professional basketball, which includes traditional rookie duties like carrying bags and helping clean the court. One of his mentors is Sweet Lou Dunbar, a Harlem Globetrotters legend who has been associated with the organization for more than 50 years.
Watson has already experienced what life on tour is
like—playing on the same courts as legendary players and Hall of Famers. He has participated in interviews, signed autographs, visited the New York Stock Exchange, and played at iconic venues such as Madison Square Garden. He has also played at Colonial Life Arena, making the experience even more meaningful for a South Carolina native. The moment was especially full circle for Watson, who previously won a state championship with Gray Collegiate Academy.
Watson attended Wofford College before graduating from the University of West Georgia. He played professional basketball in Mongolia before signing a contract with the Washington Generals. His goal remains the same as it has always been—to be the best player he can be—and he plans to bring his strong work ethic to the court throughout his professional career.
“This experience is a blessing,” Watson said. “It’s
amazing, and I thank God every day for the opportunity. I’m a country boy, so all of this is fairly new to me.”
Watson is thrilled to be part of the tour, especially during such a historic season.
“You can only be part of the 100th year once,” he said.
