Stonewall McKinney Richburg
August 14, 1921 – September 9, 2024
With deep sadness, the family of Stonewall McKinney Richburg announces his passing on September 9, 2024, at the age of 103. Born in Tuskegee Institute, Alabama, on August 14, 1921, he was the only child of G.S. and Calvesta McKinney Richburg.
He spent his final years living with his daughter, where he received loving care.
Affectionately known as “Richburg,” he was educated in the schools administered by Tuskegee Institute and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Education from Tuskegee University and a Master of Education from Purdue University.
His military service began in 1943 when he was inducted into the United States Army, where he distinguished himself as one of the top graduates from the Army Engineer Officer Candidate School.
Richburg made Columbia, South Carolina, his home in 1946 and began a fulfilling career in education. He served as the first teacher of mechanical drawing at Booker T. Washington High School
and later became principal at several schools during a pivotal time of desegregation.
His community contributions were extensive, including service on the Greater Columbia Community Relations Council and the Richland County Public Library Board.
He received numerous accolades for his work, including the Order of the Palmetto from Governor Henry McMaster in 2022.
A devoted Christian, Richburg was a longtime member of Ladson Presbyterian Church, where he served on various committees.
He was married to Geneva Smith Richburg for 71 years until her passing.
In lieu of flowers or plants, memorials may be made in Stonewall McKinney Richburg’s name to the Tuskegee University School of Education Fund. A private homegoing service was held per his wishes. Stonewall McKinney Richburg’s legacy of service and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.
