Edith Ruth Diggs Miller was born on October 14, 1925, in Columbia, South Carolina, and has made a lasting impact on her family, community, and church throughout her remarkable life. She resided at 1318 Harden Street and received her education in the Richland County public school system. A proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Edith was active in student life, notably serving as a majorette in the school band.
Following her schooling, Edith entered the workforce and held several positions, including working as an elevator operator. She later retired from Tapp’s Department Store, a Columbia landmark located on Main Street, after years of dedicated service.
Edith has been a longtime resident of the Standish Acres/ Burton Heights Community, where she has been a beloved neighbor and friend. Her spiritual life has been anchored in her membership at First Nazareth Baptist Church, where she is a life member. Over the decades, she actively participated in various church organizations, with special devotion to the Senior Ministry and the Jubilee Choir.
Her faith has always been central to her life. For many years, Edith attended services every week, continuing faithfully until the age of 95. Even as her health later prevented her from attending in person, her commitment never wavered—she remained steadfast by tuning into virtual services, joyfully celebrating her faith well into her 100th year.
“Growing up, Mrs. Miller was like a mother to all of us in this community and we are in our 6 0 / s and 70’s now; and to still be able to go over to her house and pray with her, talk with her and glean from her wisdom is a true blessing and a gift,” said Dr. Darla Davenport-Powell.
Edith Ruth Diggs Miller’s life reflects devotion, service, and love—for her family, her community, and her church. She is a cherished example of resilience, dedication, and faithfulness across generations.
