Orangeburg, South Carolina native, Dr. Walter B. Curry, Jr., founder of Renaissance Publications & Educational Programs, along with co-authors Beverly Aiken Muhammad and Anusha Ghosh, received the Literary Titan Silver Award for their book, “South Carolina Matilda Evans: A Medical Pioneer”.
The Literary Titan Silver Book Award is granted to books that demonstrate notable merit in the realm of literary creation, both in fiction and non-fiction genres. This award acknowledges books that deliver engaging and inventive content with a distinctive voice.
“South Carolina’s Matilda Evans is a sweeping tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. Matilda Arabella Evans, the first African American woman licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina. The book traces her incredible journey from humble beginnings in the post-slavery South to becoming a fierce advocate for public health, education, and civil rights. Written by Walter B. Curry Jr., Anusha Ghosh, and Beverly Aiken Muhammad,
the biography weaves together archival research, family history, and personal recollections to offer a detailed account of Evans’s personal resolve, her pioneering medical work, and her tireless efforts to uplift her community”, wrote Literary Titan.
“From her educational path at Schofield and the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, to the establishment of the Taylor Lane Hospital and Evans Clinic, her story is full of persistence and purpose. She didn’t seek the spotlight. She wanted people, especially poor Black families, to receive decent care. The book shows how she used her influence to fight for systemic change, founding the Negro
Dr. Walter B. Curry, Jr. Health Association, publishing her own journal, and confronting health inequality head-on. The authors’ deep personal connection to Evans adds another layer of warmth and respect, which I came to appreciate more as the chapters unfolded”, wrote Literary Titan.

Richland One announces Superintendent’s September Listening and Learning Sessions
Dr. Todd Walker, who began his tenure as Richland One’s superintendent July 1, will hold a series of informal sessions throughout the community to listen and learn from students, staff, parents and community members.
The Listening and Learning Sessions will be held in September and October as part of Dr. Walker’s 90-Day Strategic Entry Plan, which was unveiled August 7. At the end of the 90 days, Dr. Walker will provide a written report to the Richland One Board of School Commissioners outlining his findings and, at the end of 120 days, he will present a draft Richland One Vision 2030 to the community.
“A key piece of the information-gathering process as we work to develop our Vision 2030 is engaging in intentional and meaningful dialogue with our stakeholders,” Dr. Walker said. “I will make some brief opening remarks at each Listening and Learning Session, but most of the time will be devoted to hearing from attendees what matters to them most about Richland One and what their vision for the district is.”
