In July of 2020 a philanthropic arm was added to the duties of New Life Hat Society Inc. under the leadership of Christopher Davis. His focus is literacy.
Davis has relaunched The Black Boys Movement. On Monday September 9, 2024 a fundraiser is being held at the Sellers, SC Community Center and Library at 2635 Main St. Sellers, SC, in efforts to secure books and supplies needed to aid in the growth, development and expansion of programs and services being provided to young black males. The event, themed “Standing Upon His Shoulders”, is designed to highlight numerous accomplished black men. A plethora of books will be on display highlighting stories and portraying illustrations about black men, while community boys are to find a
name, do research (READ), and create an essay to be delivered at a later public forum.
The Black Boys Movement is a book club comprised of black male youth from various communities, where-in they learn to read freely, and discuss topics, write essays and speeches that they can present orally in oratorical symposiums and when having to address audiences. These young people learn a great deal regarding entrepreneurship, financial literacy, as well as setting and reaching goals, they often partake in black history lessons from a guided curriculum.
Columbia, SC Educator/ Administrator, Army Veteran and Author Dr. Perry Mills Sr., will be the keynote speaker. Raised by a single mother, Dr. Mills initially found himself disenchanted with school.
However, his enlistment in the US Army at the age of 17 transformed his perspective. Throughout his twentyyear military career, which included service in Korea, Germany, Italy, and a deployment to Iraq during Desert Shield Desert Storm, Dr. Mills discovered a passion for learning and education.
Attorney Dennis Gerald will be among the honorees. Gerald is a 1988 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law. Mr. Gerald has been in private practice since 1989, where his practice is primarily focused on Estate Planning law and Probate law cases.
