Dr. Kimberly McKnight, a dedicated teacher at Joseph Keels Elementary School, has been selected as a finalist for the Elementary Teacher of the Year award in the 2026 AVID Global Achievement Awards.
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a nationwide program designed to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
In a letter notifying Dr. McKnight of her selection, AVID Center leadership praised her commitment to student success. “Being selected as a finalist is a remarkable achievement and a true testament to the dedication, passion, and excellence you bring to your AVID community,” the organization stated. “We are incredibly proud of your accomplishments and the meaningful difference you continue to make.”
Dr. McKnight says the work she does comes from a place of compassion. “I just want every scholar to find their voice and take ownership of their learning, so I pour into them academically, socially, and emotionally. This moment really shows what intentionality, and determination can do to make a difference, and being named a finalist doesn’t just feel like recognition, it reminds me daily of my purpose and my why,” Dr. McKnight said.
As a finalist, Dr. McKnight will be celebrated for her outstanding work and leadership at the upcoming 2026 AVID Summer Institutes & National Conference. The event gathers top educators from across the country to share best practices, collaborate, and honor those who are making a profound impact on education.
“Dr. McKnight exemplifies the heart and dedication of Richland Two educators. Her work with the AVID program empowers our elementary students to take charge of their learning and dream big for their futures. We are thrilled to see her receive this well-deserved national recognition,” said Keels Elementary Principal Alvera Butler.
Dr. McKnight’s achievement highlights Joseph Keels Elementary School’s ongoing commitment to fostering an environment where every student is equipped with the tools, strategies, and confidence needed to succeed academically and beyond.
Jeffrey McMicken is the Coordinator of AVID in Richland Two. “AVID has been part of this district’s instructional DNA for more than 25 years. Throughout this time, it has positively impacted thousands of our students with high-quality instruction and opportunities beyond the classroom. I am so proud of the hard work and dedication to student success that Dr. Kimberly McKnight has shown at the elementary level that sets our students up for success in college, career, and life,” said McMicken.
Winners will be announced at AVID’s National Conference in Atlanta this December.
