Girls on the Run empowers young girls through movement and mentorship

Girls on the Run (GOTR) Columbia is excited to announce the launch of its Spring 2025 season, bringing its nationally recognized program to 13 sites across Kershaw, Lexington, Richland, and Sumter counties. This season, students will participate in the transformative, confidence-building curriculum that inspires young girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident through running and mentorship.

A key strength of this season is the incredible team of dedicated volunteers supporting the program. Many of the coaches and mentors come from within the school themselves, including educators and administrators who are passionate about making a difference beyond the classroom. Additionally, volunteers from area colleges and the greater Midlands community have stepped up to serve as role models, reinforcing the importance of physical activity, self-esteem, and goal-setting.

“We are thrilled to see such strong community support for our program across the four counties we serve,” said Ebonee Gadson, Executive Director. “Having school staff, military service members, college students, and local volunteers dedicate their time speaks volumes about the impact Girls on the Run has—not just on the girls, but on the entire community.”

The season will culminate in a series of celebratory 5K events in Camden, Columbia, and Sumter. The intent of the 5K is to give participants the opportunity to accomplish a tangible goal, supported by their coaches, families, and the broader community. The celebratory event is designed to showcase the personal growth and resilience each girl has built throughout the season.

Girls on the Run Columbia is committed to ensuring that all girls have the opportunity to participate, regardless of financial barriers. Scholarships and community sponsorships help provide access to the program for those in need.
