Pastor Julian A. Thompson and the Gethsemane Baptist Church of Blair held its dedication ceremony honoring Deacon Clifton R Hendrix. This exceptional occasion took place on Sunday, February 18, 2024 bestowing Hendrix the title of “Deacon Emeritus”.
Deacon Hendrix was ordained on December 14, 1975 under the leadership of Pastor Thomas G. Chisolm. Of those 49 years of service, he has never wavered from his spiritual duties or his commitment to serve. During the ceremony, Senator Mike Fanning read and presented him with a proclamation. More proclamations followed being read and presented by House Representative Annie McDaniel, County Council women Shirley Greene and Peggy Sweringen, and Winnsboro Mayor, John McMeekin. Deacon Hendrix was also recognized by church members with warm compliments and other gestures including the Gethsemane Board of Deacons. He was strongly supported by his family throughout the day and more importantly, his lovely wife, Deaconess Carrie and children Anitra and Gregory along with their families. Consequently, Deacon Hendrix ‘s renown legacy will long be remembered.
Area youth invited to attend Sigma Gamma Rho’s Community Youth Symposium
The Iota Omicron Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., invites youth in the West Columbia, Columbia and surrounding areas to attend its annual Youth Symposium on March 9, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year’s event will be held at Booker Washington Heights Cultural Arts Center, 2611 Grant Street in Columbia, S.C.
Open to all youth ages 12-18, the Youth Symposium traditionally highlights some of the prevalent concerns that negatively impact youth such as drugs, teen violence, abuse, low self-esteem, suicide, teen pregnancy, and human trafficking. The theme for this year’s event is “HBCUs & You: Honoring the Past and Preparing for the Future” and will celebrate the importance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and highlight South Carolina’s institutions. Youth and their parents will hear sessions devoted to preparing for life after high school and future careers. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with HBCU representatives in attendance.
The Youth Symposium speakers are Dr. Lamar J. White, Vice President of Student Affairs at Denmark Technical College, who will discuss finding your purpose and why; Jessica Vann, owner of Invision Counseling, who will host a parent session about supporting young leaders; and S. Christian Jackson, Director of Counseling at South Carolina State University and Founder/CEO of Couch with Christian, who will serve as mistress of ceremonies for the event.
“We are excited about this year’s Youth Symposium and celebrating our state’s HBCUs,” said Dr. Rosline Sumpter, Youth Symposium co-chair. “The preparation for postsecondary education and career should begin early. This year’s event is designed to help youth and their parents learn about the opportunities available and strategies for success. Our goal is to provide information so informed decisions can be made regarding life after high school.” The event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided.
