Germaine Jenkins in ROOTED.

Faced with a lack of access to fresh produce in her North Charleston, SC food desert, Germaine Jenkins dedicates ten years of her life to creating Fresh Future Farm, an urban farm on an empty city lot. “Rooted” embarks on Germaine’s intimate journey and her resolute quest to own the land she farms — a critical first step in establishing stability for her community and sowing the seeds of generational wealth for her family.

This new documentary screens on July 19th at 8:00pm at The Luminal Theater’s ongoing outdoor program Films at the Farm. The program’s 2025 season is dedicated to films that focus on Black land ownership and stewardship. “Rooted” made its world premiere this past October at the 2024 New Orleans Film Festival.

Gemaine Jenkins will

Prior to the film screening, The Luminal is organizing free informationals on land ownership and cultivation, as well as advice on how local residents can help combat food insecurity, a growing problem in the Midlands and throughout South Carolina. Food from local farmers is also scheduled to be on hand. The schedule of these workshops will be shared the week of July 7th on The Luminal Theater website and related social media pages.
