The South Carolina Humanities Council is a 501(c)3 organization that was founded in 1973. The Council is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The humanities include such fields or disciplines as history, literature, political science, oral history, African American Studies, English, and others. The mission of the South Carolina Humanities Council is to enrich the cultural and intellectual lives of all South Carolinians. Also, the Council is governed by volunteers. Allen University alumnus, Dr. Tom Crosby, is in his second 3-year term as a Board of Directors member. The Council wishes to increase humanities grant applications in general and especially from underrepresented minority communities.
The South Carolina Humanities Council provides two types of grant fundings for humanities projects: (1) Major
Grants are $5,000 -15,000 for public humanities large scale projects such as festivals, conferences, exhibits, music series, documentaries, etc. and (2) Mini Grants support public humanities modest cost projects up to $5,000 such as public lectures, small exhibits, student camps, oral histories, historic markers, etc. In addition, the Council also provides funds for Planning Grants, Literary Grants and other kinds of grants.
Applicants are urged to consult with the South Carolina Humanities Council’s staff early in the grantee’s planning stage and submit a draft for review by the staff prior to the grant’s applicable deadline.
