Free Tax Assistance is available again this year through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, managed for the Midlands by The Cooperative Ministry in Columbia. Families and individuals earning under $63,000 a year can qualify.
Free tax services opened Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, at locations around the Midlands. Operating hours vary and no appointments are necessary at most sites.
There are three options for tax assistance: In-person drop off and pick up at a VITA tax site, virtual drop off online at getyourrefund.org, or do it yourself through myfreetaxes.com.

Black History Heritage Ball
On February 25, 2024, the City of Columbia introduces the 2024 Black History Heritage Ball. The public should be dressed in African attire for the event. The heritage ball will be held at Hyatt Park, located at 950 Jackson Avenue.
The ball features entertainment, food, door prizes and surprises. Senator Tameika Isaac Devine will be the guest speaker. Tickets are available for $12 and must be purchased in advance at the Parks and Recreation Main Office location of 1111 Recreation Drive, Columbia SC. Seating is limited.
