Emotional Wellness: Recognizing the Relationship That Disrupt Our Peace

By Phyllis Bennett

MENTALLY SPEAKING

Mentally Speaking on emotional manipulation, boundaries and protecting your mental health. Not every relationship that enters our lives contributes to our emotional well-being. Learning to recognize unhealth patterns and establish boundaries and prioritize our peace is an important part of emotional growth. Our emotional well-being is influenced by many aspects of our lives, including the relationships we maintain with others. While health relationships can provide support, encouragement and a sense of security, unhealthy relationship dynamics can sometimes leave us feeling emotionally drained, confused, and disconnected from ourselves. It is important to recognize the patterns without judging others but about becoming aware of how our interaction affects our mental emotional health. Developing awareness allows us to make healthier choices, establish boundaries, and create space for relationships that contribute positivity to our lives.

Unhealthy relationship patterns are not always easy to recognize, especially when they develop gradually over time. Sometimes, they appear through repeated misunderstandings, a lack of accountability, and dismissive communication. These are behaviors that will leave one person feeling unheard or undervalued. When these patterns occur or become consistent, they can create emotional stress and make it difficult to maintain a sense of balance and security. It is very important to recognize these behaviors not for placing blame or assigning labels to others but more to protect your well-being. Awareness is often the first step towards making a healthier decision and building more respectful connections.

Over a period of time, unhealthy relationships can begin to affect more than just our interactions with others. They can also influence how we feel about ourselves. Have you ever had someone that makes you feel like everything you do is wrong and you can’t ever get it right? You are just simply the problem when in all actuality you just genuinely show up with love, loyalty and support and not looking for anything in return except being appreciative. Constant tension, repeated criticism, emotional invalidation, and uncertainty can contribute to stress, self-doubt and anxiety, and emotional exhaustion. Some individuals may find themselves overthinking conversations and questioning their own feelings or feeling responsible for maintaining peace at the expense of their own needs. It is very important to acknowledge that the impact of our relationship is not a sign of weakness. It is an important step towards understanding our emotional needs and protection of your overall well-being.

Establishing healthy boundaries is an important part of maintaining emotional wellness and building a healthier relationship. Boundaries help us communicate our needs and define what we are comfortable with, and what behaviors are affecting our well-being. They are not intended to control or punish the other person but intended for our own good.  Setting boundaries may sometimes lead to discomfort or disagreement when someone is accustomed to having unrestricted access to our lime and energy, but our wellbeing remains relevant.  Learning to say no is an essential part of protection our emotion well-being. It can be difficult for individuals who are accustomed to putting the need of others before their own but sometimes the fear of disappointing someone can create conflict or even being misunderstood.  Saying no does not make us selfish, uncaring or disrespectful. It means we recognize that our time, energy, and emotional capacity have limits. We can care about others without feeling guilty for protecting our peace of mind. Healthy relationships come with individual needs, understanding, honesty and mutual respect, not just respect for one. We do not have to overexplain ourselves just to make someone else feel at peace meanwhile we are not.

Emotional wellness begins with becoming aware of how our relationships affect us and recognizing that we have the right to seek connections built on mutual respect, honesty, and understanding. We cannot control others’ behavior or choices, but we can control how we respond to it and what boundaries we will establish.  I’ve learned all this throw growth, and it wasn’t every relationship but a particle one that almost made me lose myself. If I never recognize the patterns, they will continue to repeat itself. Learning and growing is a way of moving forward because sometimes we make the same mistakes over and over. The goal is not to create a life without conflict, but to develop awareness and emotional strength to recognize when something is unhealthy and respond in a way that will protect our mental health. In any situation you always must choose peace, and it is not about rejecting others, it is about remembering that our well-being matters.

“Mentally Speaking With Phyllis,” give yourself permission to protect your peace, honor your boundaries, and choose relationships that allow you to grow without losing yourself.”
