Denmark Technical College has concluded its Forging Onward 2020-2025 Strategic Plan, closing out a five-year cycle of growth and transformation. The report, recently approved by the Area Commission, highlights advances in student success, academics, community partnerships, communications and financial stability, while also setting the stage for the next plan, which is already in development.

The plan drove measurable outcomes across the college. Student placement rates reached 9 8. 3 % , surpassing state system benchmarks and the practical nursing program achieved a firsttime NCLEX pass rate of 100 % . Technology upgrades placed modern equipment in nearly every classroom, while expanded online programs opened new pathways for learning.

“Our focus on enrollment, persistence and retention laid the foundation for these results,” said J.L. Porter. Ph.D., vice president of student affairs and champion of strategic priority one. “Near-perfect placement rates and stronger academic performance show that our students are not only staying but are thriving.”

The impact extended beyond academics. Denmark Tech renewed its role as a community anchor through initiatives like Second Chance Pell for incarcerated learners, expanded dual enrollment for high school students and workforce partnerships with businesses across the service area. These efforts provided opportunities for students to prepare for careers while supporting industry needs.

“We took a college that was struggling with how it was seen and gave it a bold, modern identity that truly reflects its strength and vision,” said Amy Roper, director of public information and marketing and champion of strategic priority four. “This was a complete rebrand, not just a logo change. It unified our message, strengthened our visibility and restored pride in who we are as an HBCU and a beacon of hope for the communities we serve.”

Financial sustainability was also a core achievement. Denmark Tech implemented a new budget model, streamlined busi-

Sylvia Murray. Members from First Nazareth were Robbie Diamond (president), Patricia Green, Cora Nicholson, and Sylvia Murray who is a member of both organizations. MSA staff were Janice Harris, Aretha Brown, Dee Davenport, RN, and Julianne Rogers. The Hattie McDaniel

ness processes and secured external funding to strengthen operations. In fiscal year 2024, the college became the first in South Carolina to submit its audited financial statements, underscoring a renewed commitment to accountability.

“This progress is the result of the dedication of our students, faculty and staff, as well as the support of our community and partners,” said Tia Wright-Richards, interim president. “We are proud of what has been accomplished and excited to begin the next cycle of strategic planning as we continue to engage, educate and empower.”

Kevin Whitt, chair of the Denmark Technical College Area Commission, said the work has positioned the college well for the future. “The Area Commission is proud to have supported the Forging Onward plan and to see the remarkable growth that came from it,” he said. “We look forward to the college’s continued success as it launches its next strategic plan.”

The new strategic plan cycle is already underway, with goals to build on recent progress and further strengthen Denmark Tech’s role in technical education and workforce development.
